Dieter Rams' Design Manifesto

The legendary Braun designer who taught that upstart Jonathan Ive everything he knows had 10 core design principles.

Braun T3 pocket radio and Apple iPod.
• Good design is innovative.
• Good design makes a product useful.
• Good design is aesthetic.
• Good design helps us understand
   a product.
• Good design is unobtrusive.
• Good design is honest.
• Good design is durable.
• Good design is consequent to the
   last detail.
• Good design is concerned with
   the environment.
• Good design is as little design as possible.

I would add that good (let's say 'great') design is recognizable in this way: Once accomplished, it will seem to many to be the only, and inevitable solution. Only the designer, with a drawerful of less-satisfactory approaches, knows otherwise.
